Bridesmaid wants to get out of being in the wedding

I am a friend of a soon to be bride (maybe). I do not have any money but decided to agree to be in the wedding. I figured for her special day I could find dress money somewhere. The wedding is over a year away and we have already been doing dress shopping, and the bride expects us to do dinner every month up until the wedding. The couple have already called the wedding off 3 times and now have gotten back together and are engaged again (#4). How can I get out of being in this wedding. Because I agreed the first time, every time they get back together she calls me telling me its back on so I need to pay for my dress. I love my friend but I don't have money to throw away on something that could never happen.

Dear Wedding Sick,

Yes, you can opt out. You can and should be very honest about your reasons. It shouldn't be a surprise since they are so hot and cold, but it may be. So, speak privately and delicately about it.

Best wishes,
