Brother to be "Maid of Honor??"

I am having a dilemma regarding my MOH. I have had a best friend for the past 15 years, and have repeatedly told her she would be my MOH. She has lived out of town for several years and we are not as close as we used to be. My mother recently suggested I ask my brother (who I am very close to) to fill this role. If I decide to ask my brother, how do I tell my friend she will not be my MOH, and what will my brother be called?? Please help. Thanks.

If you decide to choose your brother, then tell your friend the truth; that your brother is going to be the honor attendant. If she asks why, give her the reason you stated here.

As for his title, he would be called a 'Man of Honor'.

I also heard he could be called "attendant of honor?" Which term is more appropriate?

I have heard them called honor attendants and, in my opinion, this sounds the least awkward but I think it's just a matter of personal preference.
