Can a bridesmaid become engaged during her friend's engagement?
My best friend became engaged 6 months ago and her wedding is in 8 months. I am her maid of honor. My boyfriend and I plan on becoming engaged in the next 6 months, roughly. However, my best friend mentioned that she thought it was inappropriate for a bridesmaid to become engaged during her engagement because it would be taking the attention away from her. What is the right thing to do? I know it is inappropriate to have a wedding within 6 months of family or close friend, but i didn't think there was restriction on when you could get engaged. Besides, regardless of when I get engaged I would not plan a wedding for 1.5-2 years or so. Thanks!

Some weddings are being planned years in advance so it would be selfish of a bride to expect their attendants to put their lives on hold during her wedding planning. Please let her know that you will be proceeding with your plans and assure her that your engagement will not keep you from fulfilling your role as her maid of honor. I completely agree. Plus, there are no 'rules' concerning an attendant getting engaged during the bride's engagement period. In fact, family can get engaged or even married during this time period as well. We hope that family and close friends would schedule their weddings at least two months from our date. But, there is no firm time period that we adhere to. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
