Do you have to have a matron of honor?

I am in the process of choosing my bridal party. Two of the women are unmarried and one is married. My closest friend is unmarried and I want her to be my maid of honor. My married friend has been my friend since high school and I was a bridesmaid in her wedding a few months ago but I am not as close with her as I used to be. Do I need to ask her to be the matron of honor since she is the only married attendant or can she simply be a bridesmaid?

Thank you in advance for your response!

No, you don't need to ask her to be a matron of honor. Only ask those closest to you. In fact, if your friendship has dwindled with your married friend, you're not obligated to ask her to be a part of the wedding at all. But, if you're still friends it will be nice to have her in the group.
