I am a bridesmaid in a wedding happening next year and want to financially prepare myself. What are my financial obligations ? The wedding is local so travel expenses are not an issue. I understand I am responsible for the cost of my gown, shoes, alterations and gifts for both the bridal shower and wedding. However, I am unclear of any costs beyond these. I don't want to sound ignorant but I have heard different things from different people some clarity would be nice.

You have listed most of the expenses. You may be asked to chip in for a shower or bachelorette party, which you may choose to participate in or not as you wish. You may also want to budget for hair and makeup services (and possibly accessories) if you desire them and they are not provided for you. I agree. And, it is perfectly appropriate to share the cost for the shower and wedding gift. The shower gift should be much less expensive. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
