     I don't want future sister-in-law to be a bridesmaid

I've always thought that I would only have my sister in my wedding and no bridesmaids, just a simple thing. My fiance has a sister and we have nothing in common. My fiance has a very distant relationship with her. We see her often though because she lives close by and my future mother in law wants everyone to stay close. The sister got married abruptly last week and asked me to be a bridesmaid. I accepted out of politeness (maybe I shouldn't have) and I know that she is totally expecting me to ask her to be a bridesmaid. My fiance doesn't care. I just don't know how to approach the subject with her and the mom ( I do get along with the mother - she told me I am the daughter she never had before, but a daughter is a daughter and I know she will side with her real one which is understandable).
My fiance has 2 friends he would like to have in his party so now we have 2 guys and 1 girl (my sister). I know it's not a big deal that we have an uneven number of attendants.

I just need advice on how to approach the subject with her without hurting her feelings (I was thinking of asking her to read something at the ceremony instead), or if I should suck it up and have her as a bridesmaid.

Thank you in advance for our answers.

Bridesmaids' roles are not necessarily reciprocal. Meaning, just because you were in her wedding as one doesn't mean she has to be in your wedding as one. So, if you do not want her to be a bridesmaid then don't ask her to be. Wedding attendants should be those people most close to you. Yes, you can give her some other special role.

That being said, asking her to be a bridesmaid may go a long way in fostering a bond with your future sister in law and perhaps avoid some unwanted family drama.

I couldn't agree more on all accounts.
