     Is a Maid-of-honor absolutely necessary?

My fiance and I are having a small destination wedding in Las Vegas with just immediate family and a couple of very close friends. He prefers to keep it small by not having a best man or a maid-of-honor. It doesn't matter to me either way, but his mother is insisting that we HAVE to have both in order to have them as witnesses to our wedding who will sign the marriage certificate. We're feeling a bit pressured and are not sure what the proper etiquette would be for this. Is it absolutely necessary to have moh & best man? If not, who would we have as witnesses (with a less formal role in the wedding ceremony)?

Thanks for your advice. We've been back & forth with this for awhile now. I appreciate your help!

Dear TKCasting,

Your marriage certificate can be signed by anyone at the wedding. Your destination contact can provide witnesses or one of your guests at the location can sign for you.
