     MOH overwhelmed by bridal shower

HI,

I'm MOH for a friend who lives in NYC. I live in DC and so will be doing the planning from there. I've recently begun the planning process and have been emailing with the two bridesmaids, the mother of the bride, and the mother-in-law. The bride expects that the shower will be held in a restaurant or bar type of venue somewhere in NYC and has offered suggestions for where to hold it. I'm really nervous about how much it will cost. The mother of the bride realizes that the cost of this bridal shower could be really expensive and so has offered to subsidize the cost. I am in no position to be footing the bill for a private party space in a restaurant in NYC as well as the cost of food/drinks for the party attendees. Is it reasonable for me accept the mother's offer? If so, how much is reasonable to expect?

Dear Suzy,

We have very many posts just like this that you could direct your bride and her mother to. Please read them. Of course the same info is in etiquette books as well.

The bride (and the mothers) has nothing to do with the planning of the shower, which is an optional party. You don't have to do anything. And, even though she wants her shower in a restaurant doesn't mean that she gets it. If you want to host a shower, host one you want to host. And, please follow all of the etiquette we have listed in all of our posts.

Even though the mother shouldn't have anything to do with planning or hosting, if she wanted to give you money to help with the costs, you could accept it. But, she should have nothing to do with the planning or hosting. This should be a small, intimate party--no mega party.

Best wishes,
Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
