My Maid of Honor backed out... now what!?

My Maid of Honor was my 17 year old cousin (I have no sisters and neither does my fiance). It turns out her prom is the same day as my wedding and she decided that she would rather go to the Prom than be my maid of honor!! I am humiliated! But even worse I don't know what to do now! I don't have a "Best Friend" or a sister to ask and even if I did wouldn't that be rude to ask someone to be your "back-up" Maid of Honor?? So here is my question... do you really need a Maid of Honor and if so, can my mother do it but not stand up in church (nothing against her- she said she didn't want to)?

Dear Maid of Honor,

You don't need a MOH. Your mother could be your MOH, but if she doesn't want to stand with you, it doesn't make any sense for her to have that title. The only reason to have attendants is to have witnesses.

If you have a male friend, he can stand with you--be your Honor Attendant.

And, it is not rude to ask someone to be your emergency attendant. These things happen.

Best wishes,
