Backing out of being a flower girl

My 4 yr old daughter has been asked to be a flower girl at a cousin's wedding. For personal reasons, I don't want to go. What is the proper way to back her out of being in the wedding? Would this be a horrible thing to do or is it not a big deal? The bride will have 2 other little flower girls.

Dear lsolomon,

If the wedding is months from now and no one has spent money on your daughter for the wedding, you could do this politely, especially since there are other flower girls. But, consider that this might harm the relationship.

Best wishes,

Whether it will hurt the bride or not is something only you can know, based on the reason you won't attend. However, it is your choice whether or not your daughter participates, and you have a right to politely decline.
