Junior bridesmaids, generally girls age 9 - 14, proceed before the bridesmaids (if any) and before the honor attendant (if any) and stand with the attendants during the ceremony. They usually wear a more modest form of the bridesmaid's/maid of honor's attire, carry a smaller (generally more appropriate to their size) bouquet, and act in a similar, but scaled down role that a bridesmaid might play. You may also have your junior bridesmaid sit during the ceremony if you or she would be more comfortable with that, but by 9 they can usually stand for the whole ceremony.
If you want to explore alternative roles, and depending on her maturity, you might consider having the family participate in a family unity candle ceremony, or if she is particularly comfortable in front of crowds and under pressure, read a simple, short passage.
The important thing is to give your closest family members a meaningful and age-appropriate role that satisfies their need for inclusion, and your desire to have them help celebrate your new life. Shayna Walker, Williamsburg Wedding Design http://www.williamsburgweddingdesign.com
