My fiance and I cannot agree on the flower girls for the wedding. He wants his neice (who will be four) to be the sole flower girl. I want my niece (who will be three) to join her. He is adamant that she is too young and won't understand what is going on and will act up. She is an anxious and shy child, I do admit. My family is assuming she will be a flower girl and, quite honestly, it breaks my heart to have to exclude her. She won't know or care less if she is in the wedding, but my sister will. I would love to find some honorary role for her or at least allow her to dress up in a pretty gown. Any thoughts/ideas?

Flower girls are usually between the ages of three and seven. So, she will be old enough to be one. As long as your sister sticks close by to handle any unexpected behaviors that her little toddler may exhibit, having your niece in the wedding is something that can work. Thank you. I'll share your response with my fiance and hope that it will influence him to reconsider his position!

I'd like to mention that children of all ages can be unpredictable. A child of 5 can seem very mature when in a small social setting, but, when he walks into a crowded church could become frightened and unwilling to perform. I think if you approach the ide of having children in the wedding without an expectation of perfection you'll be fine. Be ready for the kiddies to bail when they see strangers and be willing to accept what they do. Sometimes kids can be surprising - and funny!
