What does the bellringer do in the wedding?

What exactly is the role of a bellringer? My fiance has two nieces, one of which will be the flower girl and one we would like to be the bellringer. I never even heard of a bellringer until I saw a small article on it. However, it didn't explain much. Will she walk down the aisle ringing the bell? Do we dress her as we do the flower girl? Any details would be a great help! Thanks!

Dear Ccronister,

When I have used bellringers in the ceremony, I've always had them walk in prior to the flower girl and once the flower girl has reached the altar the bellringer rings the bell and announces "Here Comes the Bride". I would think that having them announce the bride as they walk down the aisle would be good too...in that case they would walk after the flower girl.
