bride wants mother of flower girl to walk her down the aisle?

I was asked by a friend of my brother's if my 2 and half year old would be a flower girl. The bride said I could get any dress I wanted for her, it did not have to match. The only thing she asked is for her hair to be done cute (nothing super fancy though and for me to walk/aide her down the aisle. The wedding is at 11 am at a local church, reception follows immediately. Wedding is over 4th of July weekend. How formal/informal should her dress be? Is it ok to pick my daughter up and walk down the aisle if she becomes uncooperative? This is our first experience with her and weddings. Is there any special etiquette that I need to know?

Dear Jenann,

Her dress would be in the same formality as the bridesmaids' dresses. So, you would need to find out about theirs and blend with them with an age appropriate dress. You may need to pick her up, as she is a bit young to be a flower girl. You would also need to dress more formally than the average guest as well, since you are walking her down.

It is best to ask the bride what she wants the two of you to do once you have walked down the aisle. Your daughter may not be able to stand the entire time and you might be viewed to be an attendant.

Best wishes,
