Although we are going to 'elope' (with everyone's knowledge), when we return from our private wedding/honeymoon we are planning on having a party with family friends and would like to have an "abbreviated re-do" of our vows with a priest's blessing. At that time I will have my daugher (21) stand up for me. We were thinking it would be nice if we had his son (11) and his daughter (15) joint-stand up for him. He seems to feel, though, that his daughter "can't" fill in the role of a "best man" because she's a girl. I know I've read things about women being a "best man" but can't find anything (stories, explanations, ediquate, ect.) on the internet about this at all. Thoughts and advise, please! Mary

Dear Mary S,
This isn't a wedding, so there are no best anythings. Your children can stand with you though. However, the ceremony shouldn't appear to be a wedding.
If this were a wedding, there are no gender roles today.
