Cocktail Party for groom hosted by brother

I know it is not appropriate for family members to give shower for bride and groom. Is this immediate family or extended family? Also, is it ok for the brother of the groom, who is in the wedding, to host a cocktail party for the bride and groom?

Dear Parties,

No immediate family members, which includes aunts should host the bridal shower. You would have to use good judgment on other family members hosting. We just want to avoid this appearing as a reason to get the most gifts possible--the Great American Gift Grab. So... decide carefully.

The brother could host this if it is not considered a gift giving situation. Engagement parties are not considered a gift giving situation, so this is probably much the same.

Best wishes,
