Best Man: Brother or best friend?

Is there any "rules" whether the Best Man should be a brother or the Best Friend?

Our bridal party has only 2 on each side and my fiance is having a tough time trying to decide whether he should choose his half-brother (they have a relatively close relationship, but he's 8 years younger than my fiance) or his best friend (they've been good friends since college) as his Best Man.

He mentioned to his mom that he might be choosing his best friend, and she's pretty upset! She said that is't custom to choose the brother and now thinks that my fiance doesn't "like" his brother any more! If she feels that way, maybe the brother would then also be insulted to only be a groomsman?

Dear Best Man Problems,

No. There is no 'rule' that states that a brother has to be the best man over a friend. It should be the person who can do the best job and is the closest. It is often not the brother for those simple reasons. Your fiance could use this 'rule' to explain to his mother why he has chosen his friend.

The attendants do not have to match up--two on your side and two on his. He or you can have more.

Best wishes,
