Can we have ushers that are seperate from the groomsmen?

My mom told me that 2 groomsmen act as ushers to seat everyone and then go up to the front of the church and take on their groomsmen duties. Is this true? I wanted to have groomsmen and then 2 friends of mine and my fiance act as ushers to seat people. Can we have ushers that are not groomsmen in the ceremony?

Dear Bride Rachel,

Groomsmen can double as ushers in a wedding but they don't have to. Whether they do is up to you and your Fiance. That being said, I'd recommend that your ushers be men who are not groomsmen. It's hard to see now, but there will be a lot going on that day. Your wedding participants are going to have enough to do in their primary roles. Adding more duties to those primary ones has a tendency to add unnecessary dynamics to an already hectic day.

Best wishes,

BrideRachel

Thanks for your reply. Can the ushers just wear nice suits or do they need to be in tuxedos also? I feel like they should wear suits since they are not groomsmen? What do you think?

These ushers should be treated the same as any of your bridal party. So, they should be dressed just as the rest of your groomsmen.
