Afternoon wedding, semi-formal. Bridesmaids matching only in color of dresses. Some are tea length, some are this and that. All same material?
Groom wants to go with gray suits for groomsmen. (NOT tuxes) SAME suit? Seems silly. I am thinking similar color but your own style, and new. I don't know... that's why I'm here. Just trying to help my poor buddy out as his brother the best man is far far away and we are all semi-clueless. haha

You are a good friend indeed.
Usually for the semi-formal wedding all of the attendants dress the same--men dress in the same suit, women dress in the same dress. Some will go for a bit of style and choose the same dress in different, but complimentary style. We usually only wear different outfits when the wedding is less formal.
So, if the wedding is less formal, the suits could be different, but they should be complimentary. Gray suits would be fine.
