Is there any etiquette on what type of gift is given to the bride at her bridal shower from the groom's mother?

Dear Stevesmom,

Not really. Many try to state that the groom's mother shouldn't try to upstage the bride's mother in giving a gift that is nicer than hers. But, that is rather silly.

Just give her (them) something you know they will enjoy. A shower gift really shouldn't be as expensive or elaborate as a wedding gift. Perhaps if you know what type of cake cutter they want, that could be your gift.

Best wishes,
