I have just been invited to my future sister in law's bridal shower. The invitation noted where she was registered. I looked up her registry and it's not very long and rather pricey unless I want to just get them the $30 laddle they want. I am already flying my family across the country plus paying for 2 tuxes for the wedding plus a wedding gift from the above registry. Do I have to buy the bridal shower gift from the registry?

Dear Katie:
The bridal gift registry is set up as suggestions for wedding guests. You do not have to make the purchase from the registry, in fact, shopping for something on your own, for a gift that came from your heart, would make a much better gift, in my opinion.
Consider your sister-in-law and her groom, their hobbies, likes and personalities and I'm sure you'll select something really appropriate.

You may also want to consider giving them a small shower gift with a gift certificate to the store where they are registered. The expensive gifts on the registry may be "dream" gifts that the couple would like, but don't really expect to receive. Some couples, especially those who already have most of the household items they need, will list "dream" gifts as a subtle hint that they would like cash or gift certificates as shower/wedding gifts which they can then use to purchase these expensive items for themselves.
