Do attendants need to buy a wedding shower gift?

If the bridal attendants are contributing to the shower, do they need to buy a gift off the registry? Also, should it be an expensive gift or could two or more attendants go in together on something reasonable?

It is expected that the attendants give a gift but the gift does not have to be chosen from the registry. You can give a group gift and the gift does not have to be expensive. However, the idea or definition of the word expensive can vary so if you are giving a group gift please discuss it and have everyone agree to the cost before making a purchase.
