     Jack and Jill Bridal Shower

My best friend is getting married in Februray 2006. I am her Man of Honor. Being a man, I don't want to throw her a "traditional" bridal shower. So I was thinking about a Jack & Jill Shower. I'm just out of my element. I don't know where to begin. I know my friend and her fiance would be happy with something simple. I'm thinking about having it in January, but I don't know who I'm supposed to invite or if I'm supposed to pick a theme. I need to keep this inexpensive, but my house isn't huge and I can't afford to rent a place. And after reading some other postings, I'm supposed to give gifts to everyone? And should I invite the kids or not? Should it be in the afternoon or evening? This is something I would normally turn to my friend to help me with, but it's for her, so I can't have her plan her own shower. Both our mothers live out of state and our other good friends don't live close by. Suggestions?

Dear Out of Your Element,

This doesn't have to be a huge event and is better when it isn't. So, your place could be large enough. It can be held at any time of day and have any theme.

Think of what your friend loves to do and go with that. If she loves to cook, perhaps this could be a party where everyone brings their favorite recipe. The invitations could be on recipe cards. And, the favors (gifts) could be little gourmet items or spices. If she loves Mexican food, plan it around that theme. This is easy and inexpensive also. You could have different types of salsa and chips :)

The favors or gifts are given for games. You may want to ask around for some ideas for this.

Cake is often served at these events. This doesn't have to be expensive.

You ask your friend who she and her fiance would like to attend. Limit the list though. If you can only host 20 in your home, let them know that before hand.

You might want to keep this an adult party so you can limit the number of people attending. These usually are adult only events anyway.

Please note that this is an optional party, so anything you do is a generous gesture.

Best wishes,
