     Not being able to attend.

I am the mother of a groom, living out of the state. and was invited to a bridal shower to my surprise, which is due to my not knowing much of wedding customs in the States. Somehow, I have thought that only bride's close friends and co-workers are invited to the shower.

On the day of the bridal shower I am scheduled to fly back home from attending the wedding of my friend's son. So, I can't attend the bridal shower to be held out of the state. I would like to know what is proper etiquette regarding how to respond to the invitation and how to send a gift.

Thanks.

Dear Flying Out,

The mothers are often invited--not always, but often

You could RSVP saying that you will be unavailable and ask where to ship the gift. Many brides are now listing the shipping address where they register. This makes shopping much easier when you shop on-line.

Best wishes,
