Passing the Gifts Around at the Shower

In this day and age, do you find it acceptable if we don't pass the gifts around at the shower? My mom is completely fine with not passing the gifts, she prefers it, but my MIL prefers to pass the gifts. There are going to be a lot of people at this shower and my bridesmaids who are organizing it feel it would take too long to pass every gift around. Not to mention, what happens if something gets broken?

HELP!

Dear Drkral,

The gifts don't need to be passed, but shown to everyone. And, there may be a problem here. You say that there will be a lot of guests. There shouldn't be more than 35 or it may appear to be a gift grab and a greedy affair. After all, guests are already giving you a wedding present.

If you would rather not have gifts at the shower you could ask the host to stipulate that this is a gift-less shower.

Oh, and mothers don't plan. The hosts do.

Best wishes,
