Who is supposed to host a bridal shower?

I was wondering who, traditionally, is supposed to host a bridal shower. I'm the mother of the groom for a July wedding. I never thought anything about hosting a shower until I got invited to a shower for another summer bride being hosted by her future mother-in-law. Is this one of those things that's expected of a MOG?

Family members should not host a shower unless they are a member of the bridal party. Typically the maid of honor and the bridesmaids host but the shower is an optional event.
