appropriate to have a shower when wedding date is in 5 weeks

My sister called me last night to tell me she was getting married. They just picked the date, which is in 5 1/2 weeks. She is having a small and simple affair. Since her wedding invitations will need to go out immediately, is there time or is it appropriate to have a shower for her at this point? It could be done 2 weeks before the wedding, which would give me 2 days to plan if the invitations go out 2 weeks before the shower date. How much time should there be between the time the invitation goes out and the shower? Should there even be a shower at all?

Thank you

Dear Lbsister,

It is best not to host a shower. There is barely enough time to invite guests to the wedding, let alone a shower. In fact, wedding invitations should have been mailed a couple of weeks ago.

Only those invited to the wedding may be invited to a shower. And, with the small wedding, showers usually seem as a ploy to garner to gifts from most guests. It isn't polite to the guests.

Best wishes,
