I'm a bit confused about gift-giving etiquette. I have already purchased a gift from the couple's registry, which I had sent to their home. Now I'm going to the bride's shower, and I'm not sure if I'm expected to take a gift to that as well, or if I can just attend without a gift since I already sent them something. Is it ever appropriate to show up at a shower without a gift? Or is that terribly rude since the whole point of the shower is to "shower" the bride with gifts?

The gift you sent is considered the wedding gift. You're right, the bridal shower is a gift giving event so you should purchase a separate gift for the shower. It is not proper to attend a bridal shower without a gift. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
