Aunt not invited to rehearsal dinner at destination wedding

My niece is getting married in Aruba. Attending the wedding is putting a strain on my finances. My husband, daughter and I are escorting my elderly mother to the wedding. We live together and I take care of her. She has various medical issues and will need a wheelchair, etc. She is the grandmother and it was made clear the couple would be hurt if she did not attend. I just recently found out that we will not be invited to the rehearsal dinner, just my mother (the grandmother) as "she is in the wedding party". I am the only aunt. I am furious and insulted. Am I being unreasonable?

Dear Auntie,

Only those who will be in the rehearsal need to be invited to the rehearsal dinner. So, you wouldn't be invited. If your mother is invited, she must be seated as special or she wouldn't be invited to the rehearsal dinner either. Hopefully the couple is doing something special for all those traveling the distance.

You don't have to attend the wedding even though the couple has indicated they will feel hurt. One of the down sides of the destination wedding is that many of our close family and friends won't be able to travel. This is common. So, it really is your decision.

Best wishes,
