Best man wants to ask bride's parents to help pay for destination wedding expenses
I guess it's not really a destination wedding, but it is for me. A friend of mine currently lives in Colombia and I live in New York. Even though he was born in Colombia he moved here when he was 6 but never got his residency. So, at the age of 27, he had to go back to Colombia and live in virtual exile. Not knowing Spanish or anything about the country or anyone in the country. Well, he's been there for over a year and he met a girl and is getting married in January. I am his best man and only man. Only his sister and her husband, who live in Boston, are the others that will be attending as his guests. The problem is that I am a broke college student. The ticket alone is $750. Plus we will be staying at a beach resort for 5 nights bringing my travel and lodging costs alone to over $1000. Ill also be missing a week of work. Being that I struggle to pay bills I really cant afford it but it is extremely important that I am there. He has no family besides his sister and no one else will be attending. Is it out of line to ask for help from the brides parents for the travel expenses? Otherwise its almost impossible for me to go.

Dear Lukinsgate,
Yes, it would be way out of line to ask someone else to pay for your travel expenses. The groom is obligated to pay for a 2-3 night's lodging, but nothing else. It is your choice. Many times we cannot be where we wish because of our obligations or costs involved. This is one of those times.
