Bridesmaid paying for destination wedding lodging - still buy a wedding gift?
I am the maid of honor. I am expected to spend at least 3 nights at my own expense in NY for the wedding at about $200/night. In addition, I have already spent over $1000 on a destination bachelorette party planned by the bride and over $200 on a bridal shower also planned by the bride. With the cost of the dress and the travel to the wedding, expenses will come to over $2000. Am I still expected to give a gift if I have to pay for my lodging for the wedding when the bride and groom usually pay for this?

Dear ConfusedinCT,
The bride doesn't plan these parties. If she insists, then you have the option of not hosting or attending, as these parties would be very improper. But, you did and that was your option. The couple should be paying for your lodging (2 days). They are not, which is poor manners on their part. But, it is still good manners on your part to give them a gift. It doesn't have to be expensive.
You could mention that you have read (in any etiquette book) that the couple is supposed to pay for your lodging and hope that they cover that cost.
