Canadian Wedding - How to get married in Canada

Hi,

My fiancee and I, who live in the UK and are british citizens, would like to get married in Canada, we were thinking toronto/vancouver or by the niagara falls.

The problem is I do not know where to start!

Firstly, I need to find out what the legal requirements are e.g. what I need to do to get married in Canada in the first instance, how long I need to be there before we can get married and if the marriage will be legally binding in the UK.

Secondly, we would like a civil ceremony (not religious) and I do not know how to go about finding a location for the ceremony to take place.

The wedding will be for a maximum of four people - bride, groom and possibly the groom's parents so we are not too concerned about booking a reception although we would need to find a photographer.

I would be so grateful if you would point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

Sara Sly

Unless you like the very big city idea, I suggest you get married in Vancouver. Its very beautiful. Toronto is kind of like New York City. Keep in mind, they are on opposite sides of the continent.

Hey, what's wrong with NYC? Tongue Wink

Big city weddings can be really chic and the views from the skyscrapers...very romantic at night. Horse drawn carriages can be cool too. It's all a matter of personal preference but thanks for letting this couple know what they're in for!

Never said there was anything wrong with it. Just that its very large and very busy. It also doesn't have a whole lot in the way of natural beauty. If you like the idea of NYC, then by all means go for it.

Personally, I find Toronto and NYC to be very big and impersonal. Vancouver is much more romantic. Then again, it is a matter of personal preference.

I was teasing; that's the reason I added the two faces. Tongue

Just pointing out that the word romantic can mean very different things to each individual and that a wedding in the city can have some really spectacular views. It all depends on how you define these words.

I seem to be finding plenty of information on wedding packages in Toronto, but can not find anything in Vancouver!

Do you know of any links to wedding packages in Vancouver?

Thanks Sly

Unfortunately no I don't. You can try something like Expedia.com and see if they have any packages but I don't know of any other sites. If that doesn't work, you can always try a travel agent.

What sort of package are you looking for; travel, hotel, reception venues, etc?

I can arrange the flights and hotel myself thanks to the internet!

It is more the wedding ceremony I am concerned about. There are travel agents in the UK who can arrange weddings in Canada, but they won't just arrange the ceremony, they will only do it as the entire package with flights, hotel, etc.

I think that is a very expensive way of doing things. I can get 2 return flights from london & 10 nights in a 3* hotel for around £1000 for both of us. If I were to book with a travel agent, we would pay £1000 per person!

I have also found wedding companies in the UK who arrange weddings abroad, but none of them seem to do Canada!

The links you have provided me with have been very helpful. Thank you.

Please try to contact one of the wedding planners or even a minister or officiant listed at Canada Top Wedding Sites.
