     Destination Wedding & Dinner

My fiance and I are planning to get married in the Florida Keys. This is both our 2nd marrage and neither of us has the budget for a large wedding. We want to invite our closest family and friends to the ceremony but would also like them to join us for dinner and drinks. We can not afford to pay for everybodys meal, so how do we word our invitation to say please join us and that dinner would be at x-amount of dollars. Do we include an a-la-carte menu with the invitation?

Dear Zerbie,

This would be like asking your guests to pay for a reception for you. No, sorry. There is no polite way to word this as it is impolite. The simple rule is: you invite, you pay.

Best wishes,

If you really want everyone there, and want to host something afterwards, why not have cake and coffee back at your home. Hosting something more informal like this at 2 PM would be acceptable since no one would be expecting a meal at this time.
