     Destination Wedding Expenses

My fiance and I are planning to get married in Hawaii next summer. It is going to be a small, intimate ceremony with just our immediate family members. My question is this: are we responsible for paying our own travel/lodging, or is the bride's famiy supposed to pay for it? Please help as this has been an ongoing discussion!Crazy

Dear Destination Wedding,

More and more couples are paying for their own weddings these days and for good reason. In the past, the bride was taken care of by her father until the time she was taken care of by her husband. So, the family of the bride paid for most of the wedding.

Is this the way we live today? Of course not.

If the bride's family decides to pay for the entire wedding, they would be paying for your travel related costs. Whatever they decide to contribute toward your wedding is a gift. And, if they were to pay for your travel and lodging, they would in essence be paying for your honeymoon. This is usually something the groom and his family would pay for.

Best wishes,
