I have been invited to a destination wedding in another state. It will be small and all guests are invited to stay at the large beach home owned by the groom's parents. Is it appropriate to give a hostess gift to the groom's mother/parents for hosting us? Can you provide examples of appropriate gifts? We have not met the hosts.
My husband and children are also invited and we will stay for three nights. There will be a welcome dinner the first night, wedding and reception the second, and a dinner the last night.

Dear Destguest,
Yes, a hostess gift is most proper. Typically, as a house guest, you would give something that represents your area or region or something you know they would appreciate. For example, I am located in Davis, which is a university town also known as a biking and gardening (arboretum) haven. So, I could give a book on the history of our town as it relates to any or all of those topics. We also have statues of old fashion bikes that represent our town that would make great hostess gifts. If you know that they appreciate wine, a good wine book would be great as well.
