My son and future daughter in law are getting married in West Palm Beach since she works and lives there. However, we are from Memphis and would like to have a party for our friends here in Memphis to celebrate their wedding. These friends will not be invited to the actual wedding. Is it appropriate to have an engagement party before the wedding or a reception here in Memphis after their wedding? Or is this inappropriate if these guests will not be invited to the wedding? I would like to have some type of celebration in our home town. Please advise. THANKS!

Re: Destination Wedding Party After Wedding

Dear Trackmama,
Engagement parties are held before the wedding, hence the name "engagement". Plus, only those invited to the wedding may be invited to any prewedding party.
You could host a reception after the wedding though. But, the couple would have to agree to it and attend. Since these are your friends, it may appear that you want to secure some extra wedding gifts for your son, so be very careful. This is not a gift giving event and no mention of gifts should be included in the invitations or by any other manner.
