     Engagement announcement for destination wedding

My Fiance and I were engaged earlier this month and are planning a destination wedding next year. We are planning on sending out engagement announcements to our entire extended family. Is it appropriate to do so even if they will not all be invited to the actual destination wedding? We are planning on a reception held a few weeks afterwards. Given that, is it better to simply wait and not say anything until we send invitations to the reception? Thanks in advance for your help!

Dear Doughcfc,

Private engagement announcement (not newspaper announcements) are fairly old fashion and many view these as a plea for gifts. These aren't improper, just not the best route these days. And, even though you could send these to everyone, I personally feel that it isn't polite to send them to those not invited to the wedding. In fact, if I could write the rule, I would eliminate these all together.

It would be more polite to informally inform your family about the up coming wedding and reception.

Best wishes,
