Gift giving when attending destination wedding

I attended a destination wedding on an island. The bride and groom are having another reception back at home. What's the proper ettiquette for gift giving? I've heard multiple different opinions. Some say if you went to the island and attended the wedding then you don't have to give a gift. Others say you have to give a gift but not as much as a gift for attending a local wedding.

Dear Megs,

There is no difference with gift giving for a local wedding and for one that is a destination. It is a choice whether to attend either, so the cost of attending either isn't part of the equation.

The gift should be sent to the couple before the wedding, just the same as for all weddings.

Best wishes,
