How to start planning destination wedding

My fiance and I have decided to have a destination wedding. Most likely we will have it in the Caribbean as that seems to be the easiest. Where do we start? We've looked at websites of various islands and resorts on them, but what we really want is to find someone in the U.S.-a wedding planner or travel agent-who can help us find a good location and help with the arrangements.

Start with the same thing all brides - destination or not - start with: a critical evaluation of the factors that will contribute to your final decision. How many people are you planning to invite, and how many are likely to attend? What kind of overall budget will you have, and who will be contributing (and taking part in the decision making)? These factors will be very important when choosing your final locations.

There are tons of great destinations (beach, historical, club or garden-like, etc.) - many are actually right here in the US, which may make easier travel arrangements, but there are lots in the Caribbean as well. Start by researching the best wedding coordinators in your local area, and approaching them about a destination wedding - some will completley plan them with you while others will be glad to refer you to someone who can be trusted closer to the destination. Travel agents can be great resources for referrals to all-inclusive resorts and cruises - it's best if they've actually been to the site, though, so they can tell you the real deal.

One of the best ways to locate a planner is to ask several (very important to ask more than one) wedding vendors, venues and professionals in their region who they would recommend. If you keep hearing the same name from people who you trust, give them a call - they'll be able to at least connect you with the right person.
