How to tell destination wedding guests they will pay for their own meal

We are getting married in another state in May and having a reception in July in our hometown. We have about 30 friends and family attending the wedding and I'm wondering how we say that we won't be paying for their meal after the ceremony b/c we will be having a reception at home. WE are on an extremely tight budget and our friends and family will be providing their own transportation and lodging. (we originally planned this destination wedding to be "just us" so that we would have less hassle and expenses, but family threw a fit and want to be there so we told them they could come but would have to buy their own way) Please help. Thanks!

Dear Amy,

There is no way to politely invite guests to a dinner and ask them to pay. So, it is best not to invite. If they have invited themselves to your wedding, just let them know that they will be on their own after the wedding. You could mention that you are going to dinner and if they wish to attend they may.

Best wishes,
