We've sent save the date letters to those who will be invited to the Nov. 05 destination wedding with a tentative response date of April 15th. Once we have an idea of who can and can't come, 1)do we later send formal invitations as a courtesy to those who say they can't come? and 2) do we invite those who can't come to the wedding to the shower?

Re: [fita46] Inviting those who can't come to wedding

Dear Inviting,
You would want to send invitation to everyone you wish to attend because they may be able to attend after all. Anyone who is invited to the wedding can be invited to the shower. However, if you know someone cannot attend the wedding, it would be best not to invite them to the shower. The shower is also an opportunity to help the guests feel as if they are a part of the wedding planning process. It also may seem as if you just want a gift.

I tend to think that those who cannot attend the wedding would want to come to the shower. Many regretted that they can't come..most for finanacial reasons. Including them in the shower may make them feel more part of the festivities. what do you think?

That is one of those iffy situations. Only those invited to the wedding can be invited to the shower, as you know. But, if you know that they can't or won't attend the wedding...
You will just have to use your good judgement here. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
