Planning MY wedding when my friend is getting married too
Prior to our engagement, we had purchased plane tickets to go to Hawaii for a very good friend's wedding. She is having approx. 50 guests at her wedding and no bridesmaids. After our engagement we began planning a small (just the two of us!) ceremony, which will be a few days before my friends. We weren't going to tell her until after she gets home (she lives in another state and we see her only a few times a year) so to not distract her or "steal her thunder' but things that we are just now (4 weeks to go) getting notified of (events, girls spa day, etc.) are complicating things! Do I just tell her what we are planning or try to keep a secret and fib our way through the week?!?! HELP!! She is a very good friend, who is also very good natured and I don't see her getting upset with us, however, she is the Bride!!!!

You're not obligated to attend any pre-wedding parties since you're not a member of the bridal party. But, she is your good friend so, pick and choose the most important events and try to attend as many as possible. Thank You -
Is it appropriate for me to tell her in advance that we are also getting married the same week that she is or is this terrible of me?

If it were me, I would be honest and tell her. But, only you know your friend and how she would react. I think as long as you're not having a public ceremony and reception she'll probably be fine. Also consider that she may want to be there for your wedding if she knows ahead of time. If you really want this to be private you may need to keep the secret.
