What is the minimum distance to consider it a destination wedding?

Thank you for such a wonderful service - I have found lots of useful information already! One question I couldn't seem to find an answer for in search revolved around whether or not this would actually be considered a 'destination wedding'...

The wedding and reception will be taking place at a resort in Northern Michigan about 230 miles from the large majority of the invited guests (all located in Mid-Michigan). The rehearsal dinner will be on Friday evening and the wedding Saturday. The bride and groom will be staying two nights in the resort.

Would this be considered a 'destination wedding'? We weren't sure, since it wouldn't require airfare - it would be about a 3-1/2 to 4 hour drive. Our assumption is that the majority of guests would drive up Saturday morning before the 4pm wedding, stay one night, and then drive home Sunday...although there could also be some who would choose to make a weekend out of it.

We are just trying to determine what the proper etiquette would be in this case...

Thank you so much for your time!

Dear Wendy,

Thank you for the compliment.

It really doesn't matter as the etiquette would be the same. It is far enough that anyone attending would have to secure lodging. So, the couple would be expected to pay lodging expenses for their attendants.

But, it is considered a destination wedding even without the air travel, as it is a 'destination' that all have to travel in order to attend.

Best wishes,

Oh, I didn't realize that! I've been in a couple of weddings where I had to get a hotel and I paid for it myself both times. I thought the bride and groom only paid for lodging for destination weddings - not also for a local wedding that just the attendant has to travel to. Well, I learned something new today! Thanks again for your response!

Many don't realize that--no worries. With our out of town attendants, we don't necessarily have to pay for their lodging if we have family who can house them. So, that is the biggest difference here.

Take care.
