When to send invitations or announcements?

My fiance and I are getting married in Italy in April of 2005. Should we be sending invitations out now or announcements? Since traveling to Italy requires a bit more planning, we want to make sure our friends and family have plenty of time to make arrangements. If we send announcemnts what should they include?

Dear Sending,

It is quite early to send invitations, but your logic is valid. It will take extra planning for such a long distance wedding. So, you would send invitations. Announcements are to be mailed after you are married, not before. Save the date cards would also be appropriate, but they are usually quite simple, not including much information besides the date and couple's name. So, it is entirely up to you--invitations or save the date cards.

A wedding in Italy... I am envious.

Congratulations.

Sincerely,
