Who is responsible to pay for a destination wedding via cruise?

My fiancé and I are planning to take a cruise and get married at one of the ports. We wanted it to be an intimate wedding but unfortunately, people are “inviting themselves.” Everything I have read states in reference to destination weddings that the guest should pay their airfare and the bride and groom should pay for the lodging. The cruise we are going on is all-inclusive, and there will not be anyone that will need to fly to get there; we live in FL and the cruise is departing an hour from where we live. Knowing that, are the guests responsible for the cost or do we pay? We are fine if more people want to come than originally planned but the purpose of the intimate destination wedding was to cut costs. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dear Who is Responsible,

The guest is responsible for all the costs of attending your wedding, including the cost of lodging. Typically, you would attempt to get a discount price for your guests. Many times this is possible. But, other than that, you are not responsible for their lodging.

A nice gesture would be to ask the cruise social director to arrange a special activity just for your guests. Some cruise lines will even leave a special bottle of wine in your guests rooms. You could simply ask if there is something special they could do for your guests. They may have their own ideas. After all, they do this for a living.

Congratulations on your up-coming event.

Sincerely,

No one should expect any of us destination brides to pay for the trip - don't come - they should know that is the original idea :)

Getting married in Hawaii, I am paying for my niece (although she keeps refusing it) and my mom - 77 years old, widow and on social security and my fiance is paying for his brother and sister inlaw's plane tickets (they have 3 kids)

A destination wedding shouldn't be a free vacation for someone.
