     destination wedding engagement party

My daughter is getting married in November 2010. she and her boyfriend have been living together for 4 years. she will be getting her ring at Christmas 2009. It will be a destination wedding. Rather than have a reception after the destination wedding, I would like to host and pay for an engagement party in summer of 2010 at my home. I hope her girlfriends and/or aunts will give her a shower. Is this appropriate?

Dear Dmemother,

This would be fine, as you are not responsible for hosting a reception. They should. And, only those invited to the wedding should be invited to an engagement party. This is also not a gift giving event. Also, your daughter's aunts should not host a shower. This is an optional event that may be hosted by the couple's friends.

Best wishes,
