how to include grandma, who can't attend destination wedding
We're holding our wedding near to the bride's childhood home and almost 80% of our wedding guest list must travel to the location (which is near a major city). His grandmother is unable to make the trip. She lives in a remote area of another country and it is difficult to visit her, though we talk to her frequently. We'd like to find a way to include her but short of hiring a videographer we're coming up blank on ideas about how to show her this wedding (the groom is her first grandchild to marry). What can we do to involve her in our wedding or create a keepsake for her without videotaping the whole affair?
We are choosing not to hire a videographer as we don't see it as an essential and...frankly...we just hate all the wedding videos we've ever seen and would only be purchasing this for her (when we could fly her up for the same cost and she could experience it all herself. But this is not an option, she says.)
Many thanks!

I was going to suggest a live video feed of the ceremony. I don't know what the cost is since it would depend on where you are having the wedding and how long you want to record. I'm not sure what it is that you don't like about a video, but I can tell you that my husband and I did not have a videographer and now I wish we would have taped the event. He died three years later. I don;t want to be a downer, and I'm sure our situation is pretty rare, but you may regret the decision later. Give it some consideration if it is financially feasible.
I wish I had more suggestions for you. Maybe one of our other experts has an idea. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".

I agree. Pictures are one option, but a video is so much better. You don't need to hire a professional. Two of my friends recorded mine and although it isn't perfect, it is sweet and takes us right back to the day. Perhaps you didn't care for other videos you watched because that wasn't your wedding. It is so different when it is yours. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now

This is definitely a "Grandma" question and we need to focus on her. Her first grandchild is getting married, so if she were "present" how would be involved?
You could create a documentary of the event specifically for her, but one that could be enjoyed by all. So many people have the small digital camcorders. Whenever an opportunity presents itself "document" getting ready for the wedding, the shower, getting dressed, the wedding, the reception, etc.
While taking the small video clips, be sure the audio includes a comment directed to her. If she has sent a gift for the wedding shower, show the video clip of the bride to be opening her gift and have her say "Thank you Grandma!!". Same could be done for a wedding gift. If all she is able to do is call frequently and provide verbal support, mention a comment that she made on the phone nad how much her being there is appreciated.
If she has access to the internet or a family member can access for her, consider uploading short clips to a site that allows video clips for general viewing. This way she can stay involved during the process, rather than just seeing the results afterwards.
And, YES, I agree.... have it video taped by either a friend, family member or hired professional. Memories are priceless. Copen Cabana DJ Audio Visual Production providing Custom Wedding Coffee Table Photo Book with DVD Services http://www.knowareland.com

Video pro - now that's something we could definitely consider. I work in digital media, actually, so the idea of a web feed or interactive collage was one of the first we considered...if only she had a connection to the web :) But perhaps we can find out what she does have access to, and whip up something to cater to her. Thank you!
