     marrying in another country

My fiance and I are having a very small wedding in October. We live in Michigan near the Canadian border, and since most of our guests live in Canada, we are planning on having the wedding there. Where do we need to apply for the marriage license? Does the officiant have to be from Canada? I don't have much info on Canadian marriage laws, any advice you can give will be very much appreciated. Thank you for your help!

Dear Marrying in another Country,

You would be required to apply for a license in the country and probably county where you plan to wed and your officiant would have to be approved to perform ceremonies in your ceremony location. If you are getting married in a venue that offers ceremony and reception sites, they should be able to provide you all of this information.
