     welcome dinner, cash bar?

I'm a bridesmaid in a destination wedding in key west. the bride wants to do a welcome dinner for all invitied guests, but due to budget constraints, the food will be paid for, but alcohol will be cash only? Is this okay?

No, as we have said in many past posts, you should never ask a guest to pay for anything at an event you're hosting. Imagine hosting this at your home and handing your guest a bar tab. That should put things in perspective for you. Ask your bride to host the dinner she can afford to host. A welcome dinner is not necessary - generous, but not necessary. If budget is tight, plan a cocktail welcome with appetizers or the like.
