We are in the process of planning our wedding for October of 2008. We are developing a budget and I have allocated about $3,500 for the honeymoon. I have always wanted my wedding reception at the lakefront (along Lake Michigan, we live in Wisconsin) which is more costly due to the venue and upscale caterer. I was thinking of using the honeymoon money that we allocated towards this instead of having my wedding at a hotel (away from the lakefront).
I would like to know if it's necessary to go on a honeymoon immediately after your wedding or can it wait until mid January? (wedding would be in Oct). I could always put this on a credit card but my fiance and I really want to pay everything up-front so we are left with no bills.
I would just like to know the answer to this question, if it's more proper to go on a honeymoon right after I know we can fit it in our budget.
Thanks!

The honeymoon is a matter of personal preference. You can certainly delay it until it's more comfortable financially. It typically indicates a romantic start to your marriage, which is why so many couples take it right after the wedding. To have a honeymoon nowadays is optional and a personal choice. Some couples have one, some couples don't. So, if you want to postpone yours, go right ahead. There is nothing that says you have to go on one, or that you must go on one right after the wedding.

I complete agree with everyone here.
The honeymoon can be taken any time. Sometimes it is much smarter to wait and sometimes it is unavoidable. Mine had to wait an entire year, but was no less special.
I admire the both of you for paying your own way and doing so in advance of your wedding. Bravo. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
